My Morning Jacket Plays The Moore

My Morning Jacket

Someone once said, “If you can imagine it, it’s already happened—somewhere.” This explains the lasting trend of Japanese rockabilly; hearing Indonesian gamelan in a Capitol Hill nightclub; and Louisville, Ky.’s My Morning Jacket being excessively huge in Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands. It’s the same story with Seattle’s similarly styled Transmissionary Six, as well as Neko Case, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, and other alt-Americana acts that toil in relative obscurity stateside. But MMJ aren’t exactly small potatoes here, either—the success of 2005’s Z (their fourth album) and the subsequent tour begat the live DVD Okonokos, not to mention a gig in Cameron Crowe’s recent Elizabethtown. They can pack in a larger venue no problem, but the small Moore is a lovely place to catch a band on the crest, and the theater’s acoustics should do justice to frontman Jim James’ heavily processed vocals. Z producer John Leckie has joked that reverb is “the sixth member of the band,” which James is always in duet with. Blended with the band’s languid, just-left-of-middle-of-the-road country veneer, James’ lyrical delivery turns their moody, often redemptive ruminations into music with trend-defying staying power. Moore Theatre, 1932 Second Ave., 443-1744, www.themoore.com. $25. 8 p.m. RACHEL SHIMP
