Troy Gua must have a lot of friends. Starting with a glyph-like icon of his own design (like a letter from a lost alien alphabet), he convinced 50 local artists–dubbed “the Collaborati”–to create their own iterations in response. Thus in “Meet Greet Rinse Repeat,” we find a giant wall display of similar dingbats rendered with push-pins, Astroturf, all manner of bright, shiny plastic hues, ceramic designs, text, military camouflage… the list goes on and on. Massed together, there’s no syntax or sense or meaning. It’s like endlessly hammering on a piano key and getting a unique sound each time. But each character in the collage will be sold separately, breaking up the alphabet. Which is sad, because we like their colorful juxtaposition.
