“37 Record-Store Clerks Feared Dead in Yo La Tengo Concert Disaster,” read one of The Onion’s funniest-ever headlines. So although Sonic Boom Records had YLT’s James McNew design a t-shirt for the store’s 10th anniversary, I won’t go there. Jason Hughes’ and Nabil Ayers’ outposts (in Fremont, Ballard, and Capitol Hill) are colorful, small-ish enclaves of musical diversity (and the clerks are hot). The store and label enjoys 10 years of successful record slinging this month with a (free, while supplies last!) double compilation CD, and a bunch of in-stores (Maria Taylor plays at the Ballard spot at 4 p.m. today). Also tonight, Hughes and Ayers are given reign over 107.7 The End’s local music show, The Young & The Restless, playing two hours of their favorite Northwest music. Hughes promises some of the artists from SB Records will make the cut, while Ayers is raiding his archived Top 10 lists. “I’m sure I’ll play something from The Blood Brothers’ Crimes, because it’s one of the best albums ever,” he says.
