Garretts got what every horn player needs: an instantly recognizable sound. His alto sax is in the soul-jazz tradition, with some of Jackie McLeans sick twist and David Sanborns pop-gospel shouts. Like everyone who was ever associated with Miles, Garrett has been able to trade off that cachet (his latest disc is Sketches of MD), but his work as a leader more than stands on its own. Its smart, open-hearted, likable modern jazz. As Miles was in his last years, Garretts a populist, and he doesnt mind if people clap along to a joyous 20-minute vamp, rather than sit in the rapt silence of jazz aficionados.
