Jill Scott

Jazz meets hip-hop in a soulstress’ style

Eight summers ago, record execs fell in love with Jill Scott’s sultry voice, but didn’t have a clue what she looked like. Scott purposefully didn’t include a photograph with her demo, so that any interest she sparked would be based solely on her sound. That’s a tricky maneuver to pull off, and it worked. The Philly-raised songstress signed a record deal and released her debut album Who is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds, Vol. 1 in 2000. Scott’s earthy, feel-good fusion of poetry, jazz, hip-hop, and soul has progressively grown bolder and sassier since then, as is evident on her newest album The Real Thing: Words and Sounds, Vol. 3. The lovely Scott graces us with her latest intimate revelations this evening. Paramount Theater, 911 Pine St., 652-4255, www.theparamount.com. $43.50-$53.50. 7:30 p.m. ERIKA HOBART
