Hell Within

Sunday, June 15

About a year ago at this time, Hell Within underwent a public breakup with singer Matt McChesney, who vowed to remain part of the group (6/24/07: “I am not leaving Hell Within”) despite his public dalliances with another band (from the same press release: “I’m devoting 100 percent of my time, for the immediate future, to The Autumn Offering.”) Given Hell Within’s stance on infidelity (In the “Bleeding Me Black” video, a cuckold sets his cheating girlfriend’s new boyfriend on fire), McChesney got off light with an amiable split. Replacement Brian Roy didn’t last, so now Hell Within features J.J. Long, more of a melodic crooner than his growling predecessors (though McChesney’s experimentation with clean vocals, especially on 2007’s Shadows of Vanity, eased the transition). Frontman fluctuation aside, the Massachusetts-based quintet retains its core strengths, first cultivated when the group formed under the name Twytch in 1998: chunky downtuned riffs, harmonic solos and seismic double-bass drumbeats.
