Japanese taiko drumming group Kodo, whose primal, percussive acrobatics have reverberated across five continents, is showing Seattle its feminine side with sister ensemble Hanayui (roughly, “flower” + “togetherness”). Veteran musician/dancer Chieko Kojima, singer Yoko Fujimoto, and Okinawan dance expert Mitsue Kinjo recreate the feverish vitality of peasant rituals, beautifully illuminating various aspects of Japans rich folk history. From the trio’s authentic garb, to the gezan-bayashi, traditionally danced down a mountain path under the harvest moon, to the powerful yet elegant drumming technique inspired by Hachijo Island, every element of this visual and auditory feast promises to make for a breathless ninety minutes.
