Bellevue Philharmonic Heartening press release of the week: The headline reads “Bellevue Philharmonic to Present Two Rare 20th-Century Works” (namely, Tailleferre’s Harp Concertino and Villa-Lobos’ Sinfonietta No. 1). The warhorse on the program, Beethoven’s Sixth, only gets a one-sentence mention buried in the middle. Kudos to them for pushing the pieces you won’t hear played by every other orchestra in the state, and to conductor Fusao Kajima for programming them. Meydenbauer Center, 11100 N.E. Seattle Opera Young Artists In The Tragedy of Carmen, director Peter Brook and composer Marius Constant stripped down (to 85 minutes) Bizet’s opera, putting an emphasis on drama rather than opulence—which should be an excellent fit for the eager, energetic actor/singers in Seattle Opera’s training program.
