The Century’s Musica Vitae is going out in style with this appearance by Manning, one of the original Lindy Hoppers, who’ll lead the shim sham as well as lay down a few steps of his own. His career reaches back into the origins of swing dancing, with detours through Harlem’s Savoy Ballroom, Hollywood films, and international appearances with the royalties of swing. At 91, he’s one of the few remaining witnesses to those often tumultuous times, and he’s still dancing. We should all look half this good. Century Ballroom, 915 E. Seattle Chamber Players

The title character of Astor Piazzolla’s 1968 “tango operita” Maria de Buenos Aires rose from nothing to inspire an almost religious devotion and, in her martyrdom, become a metaphor for the city itself. Piazzolla’s pulsing rhythms are languid yet somehow tragically inexorable; his soulful, minor-key dance melodies leave the palm court far behind in bringing Horacio Ferrer’s surrealistically ornate text to life. Joining the SCP for this concert performance will be pianist/arranger Pablo Zinger, a former colleague of Piazzolla; tango singers Katie Viqueira (pictured) and Leonardo Granados; narrator Anthony Geist; and tango dancers Eva Lucero and Patricio Touceda.
