D. Black, Spaceman

Thursday, September 11

Sometimes, hitting up local hip-hop shows can feel like watching re-runs on TV – vague recollections of moments already processed and discarded are tempered with regret at having wasted your time experiencing an performance that was only mildly amusing when you saw it the first time. Watching D. Black and Spaceman is not like that. Black is the son of parents who helped pioneer the scene as members of The Emerald Street Boys and The Emerald Street Girls, and the leather-ripping energy he brings to his hard-knocking songs reflects his vaudevillian origins. Same goes for Spaceman, who chews on beats like they were Lunchables. I’ve seen them perform the bassed-out “The 808” more times than I can count, and every time it sticks with me like the roar of the ocean in a seashell.
