Cat Power

Friday, April 11

Who else but Cat Power (Chan Marshall) would be ballsy enough to cover Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin and Billie Holiday in a single album? Most artists would steer clear of such a perilous road, but this southern chanteuse has made a career out of covering and breathing new life into legendary songs. Her sultry voice exudes a bluesy emotive power best accompanied by minimal instrumentation. Yet Cat Power is highly self-critical of her performance. She’s known to stop singing when she makes even the slightest mistake and perform the song multiple times until she’s satisfied. And though one doesn’t want to encourage her compulsiveness, her show tends to be one hell of a beautiful disaster. Showbox SODO, 1700 First Ave. S. 382-7877. 8:30 p.m. $26.50 adv./$30. ERIKA HOBART
