This ain’t no burnt-wiener-and-potato-salad kind of block party. No, this one is more like a sweaty, boozy, scaled-down version of Sasquatch, only during the dog days of summer and right in our own backyard. Now in its seventh year (since Dave Meinert and Marcus Charles took over production duties), the Capitol Hill Block Party has grown from an endearing street fair to a monster takeover of the now hotter than ever (thanks, condos!) corridor of Pike between 12th Ave. all the way down to Broadway. This year’s three stages (one indoor, two outdoor) will host close to 50 bands and DJs. The local-heavy lineup reads like a KEXP playlist with hip-hoppers Blue Scholars, the Saturday Knights, and Cancer Rising; recent buzz bands Grand Archives and Cave Singers; Three Imaginary Girls indie pop delights like BOAT; the massive cabaret-style Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground and recent Light in the Attic signees The Blakes, while heavy-hitting nationals like Spoon, Aesop Rock, Silversun Pickups and Girl Talk anchor the festival. Sure, you won’t get a slice of neighborhood busy-body Mrs. Higgenbottom’s apple pie, but this party’s got platters full of ear candy—more than enough to get that summer sugar rush.
