A few years ago, Dmitri Coats– frontman of the L.A.-via-Philadelphia power-rock trio Burning Brides– said to me, “Where are the bands that make you feel like you’re driving 90 miles an hour in a convertible? Where are the bands that make you feel like walking around with gold spray paint, y’know, spray-painting pigeons? You know, bands that move you and make you think weird fuckin’ thoughts?” Since 1999, Coats and his bride, Brides bassist Melanie Campbell, have tried to be that band, releasing several thundering, melodic slabs of vintage Sub Pop-style garage-y punk-metal crossed with rock of the cock and stoner varieties, and touring regularly while enduring both record industry tribulations and drummer departures (current skinsman Pete Beeman is the band’s third). These days the Brides don’t have a label or manager, but they do have a great new album, Anhedonia, which might make you wanna drive fast, paint birds, or at least rock the hell out at the Cobra this evening.
