Broken Social Scene

Canadian supergroup Broken Social Scene has morphed from dream-like instrumental duo to indie-rock collaborative to, most recently, savvy self-promoters. After its 2005 debut album, the band—claiming upwards of 15 official musicians—began producing key members’ solo albums in the Broken Social Scene Presents… series, including those by Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning. Using the smell of the pizza to sell the slices isn’t a new business model, but the key here is this: The albums make use of current BSS players. A lot of them. And the band has said it won’t tout another side project before releasing a new group album. Also, the live show has evolved to feature various musical configurations, from old group favorites to skeletal experiments, giving fans the ultimate package. (All ages show; Gran Archives opens.)
