I’d love to report that there’s an Air Supply hipster revival kinda thing underway, but alas, there isn’t. At least none that I’ve caught wind of. Perhaps the Aussie-British group’s infamous soft-rock is too toxic for even ironic appreciation or a “Yacht Rock” spoof–after all, they were the antithesis of all things rock, the Kenny G of the late ’70s and early ’80s, the kind of group Musak producers thanked for making their job so easy. Before writing this preview, I (with as open a mind as possible) went back and listened to as much of Air Supply’s multi-platinum 1980 album Lost in Love–you know, the one that spawned huge hits like “All Out of Love,” the title track, and other unfathomably sappy love ballads–as I could bear, which, as it turned out, wasn’t really much at all. But somebody out there loves Air Supply, which continues to churn out albums and tour the world. Perhaps it’s you. Perhaps you’re a bearded twentysomething hipster who can help launch the revival! Do it! Best of luck to you!
