For her second solo release, Marketa Irglova, best known as half of the folk-rock duo The Swell Season, took inspiration from the vast scenery of Iceland, evident in the album’s sparseness. Even when accompanied by full choral, string, and orchestral percussion groups, there’s an uncluttered feel to each song that gives Irglova’s ringing voice room to grow. The religious themes that run through Muna (Icelandic for “remember”), which was also inspired by Jesus Christ Superstar and a trilogy of Neale Donald Walsch books titled Conversations With God, can give it a heavy feel at times, but for the most part the album is wonderfully ethereal.
