Pearl Jam announced on Monday that it will play two Seattle concerts this summer to raise money for Seattle homelessness initiatives. “The Home Shows” will take place on Aug. 8 and Aug. 10 at Safeco Field, and mark the band’s first hometown gigs in five years.
The band is pledging a minimum of $1 million in proceeds from the concerts to local homelessness initiatives. They additionally hope to rally fans to raise a minimum of $10 million to help address homelessness in 2018. The group hasn’t yet announced which local initiatives and organizations they will be giving the money to, with their offical website stating that the band is still “researching a wide range of programs to address Seattle-area homelessness in varied ways.”
Although Pearl Jam has been quintessential to the city’s musical identity since forming in Seattle back in 1990, the band has only played three shows in Seattle since 2005: two in 2009 and one in 2013.
“Seattle is our hometown,” said Stone Gossard, on Pearl Jam’s website. “When there are challenges here, we want to be part of the solution. It’s heartening so many organizations and individuals are coming together to do the same. It’s going to take all of us.”
Ticket prices and on-sale dates have yet to be announced, but fans can sign up for updates PearlJam.com/thehomeshows.
