A local marine who kidnapped his son is currently on the runUpdate: Both Smith and his son have been found. Details after the jump. At around 10 a.m. this morning, police in Pierce County received a 911 call regarding the apparent kidnapping of an 11-month-old boy. Turns out the suspect is the child’s biological father, Justin Smith. Police say that Smith, a 23-year-old Marine drill instructor, attempted to strangle his wife before fleeing their Key Peninsula home with his infant son. Pierce County Sheriff’s Deputies responding to the call located Smith’s SUV and gave pursuit. Smith then crashed the car into an electrical pole and continued on foot, still carrying the child. Officers are currently searching the area, and Smith is believed to be armed with a rifle. The News Tribune reports that this is not the first time Smith has attempted to abduct a member of his family following a domestic incident. According to court records, Smith was required by the Marine Corps to take anger management classes after he tried to kidnap his wife in August of 2008. A year later she filed a petition for an order of protection against him, accusing him of “taking our son out of the house following an argument and leaving the home with his firearm to an undisclosed location.” “Justin Smith has broken every protective order in past scenarios, and I am living in fear that he will do something drastic now that I am planning to keep our family safe and in the state,” she wrote in the petition. The order was eventually granted. Smith’s as-yet unidentified wife then filed for divorce. But, according to reports, the two decided in December to reconcile. Update: Pierce County Sheriff’s department officials say Smith’s 11-month-old son was found unharmed around 2 p.m. Deputies apprehended his father in the woods a short time later. Both have been transported to the hospital for evaluation.
