What suburbanites have been enjoying for two years in the sprawling area southeast of Tacoma, Capitol Hill hipsters are only now going to get a chance to sample. (So much for being cutting-edge.) Old School Frozen Custard, currently open in Bonney Lake, will be opening a second store at Pike and 13th this spring. Nathan Hedin, who co-owns the shop, discovered the frozen concoction while attending college in Pennsylvania, and decided to introduce it to the West Coast with the help of his in-laws. It’s made with egg yolks to give it a silky texture, and served at a slightly warmer temperature than other ice creams. The result looks a bit like soft-serve, but is scooped. Hedin plans to stay true to custard convention, serving just vanilla and chocolate plus a flavor of the day. (Some of the more popular are lemon, cheesecake, and butter pecan.) Mix-ins include Oreos, Graham crackers, and fruit, as well as Nathan’s Hot Dogs, which will help you justify skipping right to dessert.
