A beer even a bro could love.Hang onto your lederhosen. We’re heading to Leavenworth for this week’s Sweet Freak!During a recent day-trip to this faux Bavarian village for some much-needed brats and beer at Munchen Haus, I stopped in at The Cheesemonger’s Shop. If you can get past the musty smell in this specialty basement grocery, you’ll find a nice selection of imported cheeses, as well as beers. The one I purchased looks like it came straight from the Dream Girls gift shop: Whittekerke Belgian white beer with raspberries. At $2.99 a can, I considered this a wash; I was fully expecting a bubbly explosion ala champagne in a can. But after nearly a week in my refrigerator, I popped the chilled can and tasted a refreshing, summery fruity beer that didn’t make me want to puke. The flavor reminded me of a cross between Lambic and Moscato. The sweetness in this beverage compliments the beer flavor without overpowering it. It’s a very well-balanced brew. And at only 4.3% alcohol, it can be a nice substitute for my your weekend mimosa habit. The first few ingredients are water, malt, wheat, hops, raspberry juice and fructose. Unfortunately, those natural substances are followed by aspartame and artificial raspberry flavor. Thankfully, this beer does not taste artificial as a whole. It even has a great foamy head when you pour it into a glass. Do not judge this beer by the sum of it’s parts; it’s seriously a great little beer, even for those who aren’t sweet freaks. Or under the age of 21. The trick is to pour the beer into a glass so you don’t have to explain to your judgemental friends why you keep a stripper in your fridge.
