Today, I’d like to take a minute to talk about band names. Lately, I’ve noticed the big, long, “refer to us by our initials” names have made a comeback. I’m all for them, especially when they let you know exactly what you’re in for, like the awesomely brutal Holocaust Wolves of the Apocalypse or Beyond the Soul of the Demon Goddess. There also seems to be a resurgence of geek-chic names like Centaur Hearts (who are excellent and on tonight’s bill) or Lair of the Minotaur. Of course, the “the’s” are still big, and there always seems to be a catchword like “Grand,” “Horses,” or “Ghost” that a slew of bands seem to adopt all at once. So I’m a bit puzzled by Oregon-based meth teeth (no caps), for three reasons: One, there doesn’t seem to be anything speedy or biting about rotten choppers. Two, there is already a very metal band called Meth Teeth from the frozen Minnesota tundra and lastly, why would you want a band name that when Googled, conjures images that will haunt your dreams and turn you into a lifelong flosser?
