You might recall last Wednesday’s story by Rick Anderson about a half-million dollars in thefts from Seattle schools that went unreported to the state Auditor. If so, then yesterday evening’s top story on King 5 News about a half-million dollars in thefts from Seattle schools that went unreported to the state Auditor will perhaps have sounded familiar to you.No link or credit to Seattle Weekly, of course, but then it’s kind of standard practice for local TV news to lift stories directly from print media. (And of course, we at SW chase after other media outlets’ stories as well.) But what made this one particularly hilarious was KING’s attempt to pass off an Auditor’s report that was published on July 1 (but which went unnoticed until Rick dug it out and wrote about it last week) as “today’s news.””Good evening, The Seattle School District is getting a lesson in accountability today…” began Jean Enersen. She and Dennis Bounds then tossed to reporter Eric Wilkinson “live” at District headquarters who walked viewers through Rick’s story. Concluded reporter Wilkinson: “These losses came at a time when Seattle was closing schools and laying off staff–painful cuts that must seem a bit more painful now with today’s news.” Next breaking news story from KING: Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead.
