Queen Shmooquan (real name Jeppa Hall) calls herself a “transcendental burlesque clown.” (Translation: Charlie Chaplin on crack.) In a bizarre street performance, she gives birth to a couple of rubber chickens, noshes on a Twinkie, and regurgitates the content into their beaks. I’m not sure what that’s all about, so I call the Queen herself for an explanation. “What usually happens is that Queen Shmooquan eats a Twinkie and it zonks her out,” she tells me. “She has an addiction to junk food… it’s her gateway to altered states of consciousness. It’s how she can transform from Led Zeppelin to George Bush. And to watch her go through these experiences is transformative for the audience, as well.” Uh-huh. Apparently Queen Shmooquan and I speak different dialects of English, because I haven’t a clue what she’s talking about. But even with my limited interpreting skills, it seems safe to say her show tonight will be out of this world.
