Before last night, I would have unabashedly told anyone who would listen that I was a huge fan of the Confessions of a Shopaholic book series. Then last night I watched the DVD. The disparity between the movie and the novels is phenomenal. While they have the same basic plot, a young girl has a huge shopping problem and ironically gets a job as a money consultant, the characterization is completely different. In the books the main character Rebecca Bloomwood (Isla Fisher, pictured at left) is a materialistic girl who would die for a pair of shoes, yes, but she is also strong, independent and sassy. In the movie you have all of the negative qualities (materialistic, ditzy, airhead), and absolutely none of the redemptive qualities that made the readers of the book fall in love with her in the first place.Don’t get me wrong, I think Isla Fisher is cute as hell, and if I had to pick someone to play the part she would have been my first choice as well. Probably the funniest part of the entire movie is the dance scene halfway through where an emboldened Fisher gets a little too jiggy with it with her boss and love interest, Luke Brandon (Hugh Dancy). But even Fisher’s adorably sweet performance couldn’t save the movie’s overly cheesy plot (per Melissa Anderson’s original review), and I’m sure it left other Shopaholic series fans rolling their eyes, and embarrassed. Confessions of a Shopaholic Touchstone Home Ent., $29.99. On DVD Tues., June 23.
