“It is said that during an early 1900’s census, thecity officials asked [local prostitutes] to write “seamstress” as their profession for fear of the rest of the country seeing just how many prostitutes resided in the Seattle Area. Madame K’s theme came about when Kirsten (that’s the Madame) heard a rumor that right above where you are sitting now, was once a brothel.”~A little bit of history from the menu at Madame K’s Pizza BistroYou know what this world needs more of? Whorehouse-themed pizza restaurants.Unfortunately, what it looks like we’re going to be getting is one less bordello/bistro when Madame K’s Pizza Bistro closes the doors in Ballard come the end of the month. This place, with its wine-red walls and painted pictures of dancing girls in repose (and which was once at least part bordello, according to owner Kirsten Burt) has been catering to the neighborhood for years, but come October 28th, the staff will be packing up the neon lips and red-light decor for good. When I put in a call to Madame K’s to ask why, after all this time, a decision had been made to shut down, the girl on the phone said that she didn’t really know–but that if I was worried about missing the place too much, I could always head on out to Burt’s other restaurant: the cowboy (or cowgirl) themed Lazy K’s Pizza and Pasta out in carnation, which shows no signs of throwing in the towel.
