Capitol Cider is running their last “Green Plate Special” tomorrow, July 31, to benefit the youth gardening and cooking nonprofit Green Plate Special. The $6 gluten-free food specials will be made using produce from the organization’s teaching garden, located in Rainier Valley. Partnering with Methow Valley based Sixknot Cider, they will also produce a special cider infused with herbs from the garden. The event will feature live music by the John Sinclair Jr. Ensemble. No reservations required.

Local author Kathleen Flinn has just released her third food memoir, Burnt Toast Makes You Sing Good: A Memoir of Food & Love from an American Midwest Family (Viking). She’ll be reading from it on August 14th at a book launch party at the Swedish Cultural Center that includes food and music. Tickets are $15 and available here. She’ll also be reading at Third Place Books on August 18th.

This month’s Sunday Supper at Volunteer Park Cafe on August 10th is “Feast of Tomatoes.” For $40 a person, the four-course meal includes Blackened Tomato Bisque, Scallop Crudo with tomato water, chili smoked olive oil & sea salt, Organic Roasted Chicken with heirloom tomato panzanella salad and Tomato-Apricot Tart with basil ice cream.
