Simple Minds: not simple to sing. There’s finally a place to sing in Fremont on Wednesday nights. For years, the only steady option for karaoke there has been Mondays and Tuesdays at the Dubliner, but last month the White Rabbit brought in Absolute Karaoke to host, and it’s been a big hit. I figured it would get busy, but I was not prepared for how crazy it was the night I checked things out. I got there right when karaoke started at 9 p.m., and it was close to packed. Everyone already had half a bag on, and the rotation was over 10 singers deep. The place is the perfect size for karaoke, featuring one big room with all the attention focused on the stage. The lighting is nice and dim, and they had a big projector screen for lyrics on the wall behind the singers. The KJ’s name is Rachelle. I’m pretty sure this is her first hosting gig, but she’s a natural. I met her at another karaoke spot in Kirkland a few months back. She’s got a really quick wit and an awesome country-style voice. I talked to her a bit about the Rabbit’s scene, and she said the nights have been solid ever since they started. The crowd on the night I was there was relatively young, good-looking, and cool. People were partying, and I was very annoyed that I had to play catch-up. There is nothing worse than being sober when things are in full swing. On top of that, I had no idea what I wanted to sing. Early on, the performances were average, but they picked a lot of good classic rock and ’80s pop. That’s my wheelhouse. I could (and should) have just gone with one of my showstoppers and dominated, but for some reason I wanted to challenge myself with a suicide–a song out of my comfort zone that I’ve never tried before. It took me forever to settle on “Everlong” by the Foo Fighters. By the time I turned it in, the rotation had cracked the 20-singer mark.I was happy to wait because I needed to allow time for a buzz to set me free, but the performances got better and better as the night went on. At around 11 the place got taken over by a kickball team that had just completed a game. They were all hammered. Still not drunk enough, I got self-conscious and changed my pick to “Alive and Kicking” by Simple Minds. As soon as I turned it in, I regretted that one as well. When I finally got called up, my performance was very shaky. Luckily, a bunch of people throughout the bar knew the song and sang along and danced to it. I had a very off night, but this crowd totally bailed me out.The White Rabbit, 513 N. 36th St., Suite E, 588-0155, FREMONTFollow us on Facebook and Twitter.
