The Mariners’ home opener Monday came with the team needing a win. Badly.
A 1-6 road trip, capped by a loss in which the bullpen gave up seven runs in the ninth to lose to the Angels, had many fans worried that after a lot of hype, this would once again be one of those seasons that is over before it even begins.
But hope springs eternal. In front of a near sell-out crowd Monday afternoon, the team delivered a decisive 6-0 win over the Houston Astros. Not only that, but fans were treated to some novel snacking items at Safeco Field, including roasted grasshoppers. Who needs peanuts and crackerjack?
Jeremy Dwyer-Lindgren captured these scenes of the game.
