Don’t you forget about Jeff.Things were dead at 9:30 when I arrived at Fourno’s on the Ave for Tuesday karaoke, but I wasn’t worried. This place has a great elevated stage and one of the best hosts in town, so I knew the college kids would make their way in eventually. Technically, it’s a Greek restaurant, but with its plasmas, high ceilings, and long, narrow shape, it feels more like a sports bar at night. And when things get going, the place becomes a total meet market.By 10, the back room filled in with two separate sets of dressed-up sorority chicks celebrating senior night. There were over 20 of them, easy, and they must have just come from some pre-function, because they were good and loose, and raring to sing.Rio, the KJ, had just bought brand-new microphones. She opened with Blondie’s “Rapture,” and the sound was great. She was followed by a cute Asian gal named Haeda, whom I’d just seen sing at Tech City Bowl in Kirkland a few nights earlier. Haeda has a very unique vocal style, and chooses songs that complement that style nicely. Her first offering was “New Soul” by Yael Naim. I wasn’t familiar with the cut, but she sang it smoothly and the ladies loved it.What they didn’t love was “double-shot Tuesday” that first half hour. Rio announced when the joint was empty that singers could do back-to-back numbers–before the sorority party arrived. Haeda and this other kid, Nolan, had no shame singing two in a row, so Rio had to stick with it. Haeda’s second number, “Give a Little More” by Maroon 5, was even better than her opener, but the crowd was like “What the fuck?” Nolan brought a lot of fun with his songs, “Ignition (Remix)” and “Use Somebody,” but the sorority babes were twice as annoyed when he stayed up for the latter number. It took me forever to settle on a song. I really wanted to deliver, but had no confidence any of my standards would impress a room full of girls born in the late ’80s. I ended up singing “Don’t You Forget About Me,” wondering if any of these young ladies gave a shit about The Breakfast Club. I definitely should have loosened up with a few drinks before singing. When the girls finally got their chance, they mostly sang in groups, and were all about dirty raps from their grade-school days. One trio sang Afroman’s “Colt 45.” They danced sexy onstage in their tight dresses, the lyrics were all about sucking and fucking, and they barely had to refer to the screen. It was very nice.Fourno’s Greek Restaurant, 4733 University Way N.E., 729-5195.Follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
