The Web site Vogelisms (www.vogelisms.com) catalogs Terror singer Scott Vogel’s on-stage non sequiturs. Refreshing the page randomly generates lines such as “Dive like a bullet” and “Maximum output! Activate the Pit!” Vogel’s banter adds spontaneity and humorous respite to Terror shows, which otherwise consist of unrelenting thrash riffs and hardcore breakdowns. The Los Angeles-based group’s June release The Damned, The Shamed might be the most cathartic album of the year, with almost every track offering fans the opportunity to take out their frustrations on a raging group-shouted chorus. Terror’s songs have become a little more technical over the years, but no less lethal: It’s like a machine gun replacing a cannon. At its core, Terror still represents heavy music’s basest instincts, with profane, bilious vocals over violent backbeats and quick-chugging guitars.
