Last week, we dispatched comic artist Sara Century to the Neptune to check out Zola Jesus, aka Nika Roza Danilova, who spent nine months writing and recording her latest, Taiga, on Vashon Island. The album is her fifth full-length release; in it, the singer returns to the operatic style she studied as a young artist, inspired by the taiga forests of her ancestral Russia and the woods of northern Wisconsin where she was raised (and, likely, similar tree-filled spaces on Vashon). The electronic elements that peppered her previous releases are still present, but a newfound vocal confidence is a special highlight. Fans got a taste of just that last Thursday. Here’s Sara’s review!
