What is it about men and their barbecues? They get a pair of tongs in their hand and a few pounds of raw meat, and suddenly they’re territorial cavemen who just discovered fire. Julie Reinhardt, co-owner of Ballard’s Smokin’ Pete’s Barbeque, is helping women take their place at the fire with her new book, She-Smoke: A Backyard Barbecue Book. This Monday is the book launch at Smokin’ Pete’s, co-hosted by Secret Garden Bookshop, where Reinhardt will be reading, book signing, giving away prizes, and offering appetizers. Reinhardt has also drummed up the She-Smoke Virtual Barbecue Contest: If you think your barbecues are the best around, videotape your next soiree, and explain somewhere in it what you’re grilling and what barbecue means to you. Upload your video here by June 15. For every video she receives, Reinhardt will donate $1 to Heifer International. Categories include best-looking barbecue, best party, best video, best smoker, and best overall entry–the winner of which will walk away with a new Junior Traeger Grill. All other winners get a signed copy of her book. Men are free to enter, but we’re encouraging ladies to step up and show them who the new rulers of the fire are. Free. 6:30 p.m. Mon., June 1.
