Runs in my mind that Red Red Meat was the only band signed to Sub Pop on the strength of an unsolicited demo. I could be wrong, but as I was just going back and listening to their 1993 debut for the label, Jimmywine Majestic, I was reminded of what a powerhouse combo they were. Not only did they offer up a pretty rockin’ mix of dirty blues and ’90s alt.-rock, but their mangled lineup would pretty much morph into Califone. They never officially broke up, so I hesitate to call this a “reunion” in the Green River vein, but it’ll still be exciting to see the guys (Tim Rutili, Brian Massella, and Brian Deck) reaching back to their roots. For those of us who dig Califone’s avant blues rags, seeing Red Red Meat will be like seeing that concept in its infancy.
