The website (and picture to the right) may say simply “Summer 2010,” but La Bete–the new restaurant going into the former Chez Gaudy space at 1802 Bellevue Avenue in Capitol Hill–has announced at least two different specific opening dates and missed both of them.First, back in April, there was a “mid-June” opening floated, but that came and went with nary a whisper from chefs and “collaborators” Tyler Moritz, Dan Rodgers and Aleks Dimitrijevic. After that, a pretty hard date of August 5 was put forward, and things looked to be going well. But now it’s August 4 and a note just went out from the La Bete partners saying that things are not quite ready yet.”Due to inevitable delays, the likes of which afflict most new restaurant start-ups,” said the note from Dan Rodgers, “La Bete’s opening will unfortunately be pushed back momentarily. We’re sorry to get your appetites wet and not deliver when we wanted to, but trust that we are working diligently to get you through our doors and our food on your plates. Thank you for your patience and understanding.”No word yet on what “momentarily” might mean, exactly, but one thing Rodgers has precisely right? That blowing past a couple different opening dates is totally normal for a new restaurant start-up. Frankly, if the guys can even bring this thing in within the same season as their original proposed opening, that will put them in better shape than probably half of all new restaurants right out of the gate. I’ve known plenty of places that couldn’t even get the year right. So here’s to hoping that La Bete’s troubles are small and the resolution swift. And as soon as I hear about a third potential opening date, I’ll be sure to let you all know.
