Back before aquavit became a common cocktail component in bars around town, the Scandinavian liquor was a-flowin at uptown Ballard dive the Copper Gate. In a big blow for the neighborhood, the owners announced yesterday that the watering hole at 6301 24th Ave. NW is shuttering after seven years of business. We know that the space’s new owners are locally-based and are launching an entirely different concept with a new name in the location.

“We enjoyed serving people for seven years. It’s been a good run,” says the owners of Copper Gate. “We would like to thank our loyal customers, our staff, the musicians who performed at our space, and Ballard for having us. We had a great time having the place and we wish the new owners the best.”

You have until June 30 to order a final plate of Swedish meatballs and a Salmiakki at the Copper Gate’s beloved Viking ship bar. Staff is holding a farewell party starting at 5 p.m. EVERY DAY until it closes. on closing day.

In much better booze news for the ‘hood, Old Ballard Liquor Co. opens its doors at 4 p.m. today. But don’t get too excited: The Ballard News Tribune reports that the distillery at 4421 Shilshole Ave. NW softly launches today. While you can stop in and get a lay of the land, it’s going to be three to six weeks before you’ll be able to take home bottles of carefully taste-tested, fruit-infused Bounce liquor in flavors like cherry. “If it tastes like ass, I’m not going to sell it,” owner Lexi says in the article. Phew. Lexi also plans to produce vodka and aquavit in the coming months.
