The venerable 5 Point Cafe has been closed this week, with no neon sign shining “Cook on Duty.” But the restaurant that prides itself on serving drunks and tourists since 1929 will reopen Friday at 4 for a happy hour that offers a cheeseburger and fries for $2.50–with a deeply cleaned kitchen (those walls were white at one point, and they’re white again). There’s also a brand-new shelf at the bar dedicated to locally produced spirits. “Fuck top shelf, drink local,” says owner David Meinert.Meinert and his longtime romantic partner, Mandy Park, bought the place in late 2009, and has been steadily raising the bar in terms of quality. I had breakfast there recently, and was really impressed with the house-cured corned-beef hash, the potatoes fried super-crispy, and the perfectly poached eggs. The 5 Point’s going to roll out a new menu in a couple of weeks. Here’s what you can look forward to:Photo by Leslie KellyThe corned beef hash is swell at 5 Point Cafe. The Country Benedict includes two poached eggs on a toasted English muffin with a sausage patty. It’s smothered in country gravy instead of hollandaise.
The Crab Cake Benedict will include a couple of Dungeness crab cakes with housemade hollandaise sauce.Fried chicken and waffles. Just like Roscoe’s? We’ll see.A hot pastrami sandwich will be served with Swiss and spicy mustard on marble rye.
The veggie Reuben will stack grilled sauteed zucchini, mushrooms, onions, red peppers, and tomatoes on marble rye bread, the veggies topped with Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and Thousand Island dressing. There will also be several new burgers and a giant sandwich called the 5-in-One, a hoagie stuffed with meat, cheese, fries, slaw, and tomatoes. Reinert calls it an homage to a Philly classic. Oh, and when the weather warms up, there’s going to be outdoor seating. A damn fine spot to sit and sip a beer and stare up at the Space Needle. One last thing: Don’t know how to break it to youse guys, but that famous urinal? It’s history.
