According to Goodfruit.com, Washington State orchardists are expecting to haul in 140 million boxes of apples this autumn, “10 percent more than ever before and 20 percent more than last season.” The numbers mark a new state record in apple production, thanks largely to a smooth grow season.

Don’t celebrate just yet though—thanks to Russia, selling all these apples might present a bit of a problem. Russia is retaliating against Western sanctions placed on the country by banning food imports from the US, Canada, Australia, Norway, and the EU. European apple producers, who are also experiencing a boon in yield this year, will compete more intensely with WA apples in other markets thanks to the Russian ban as well.

All the more excuse to make apple pies domestically then.
