Ruby FrayPith4/17, K RecordsRuby Fray is one of the newer artists on K’s roster, and Pith, her debut album, is the work of an artist figuring out her sound by going in a million directions at once. Its 12 tracks veer between skewed pop (“Mint Ice Cream”), gentle balladry (“Northern Washington,” “Barren Hill”), a capella sing-alongs (“What’s All This Talk”), and freak-folk (“Penny”). In short, Pith is all over the place, but there’s never a dull moment. The record also nicely encapsulates the DIY, collaborative spirit of its label, featuring appearances from numerous K artists, including Angelo Spencer, Calvin Johnson, and members of LAKE. “Mint Ice Cream” is easily the album’s most immediate track, but the more eccentric moments, especially in its second half, point toward an artist with plenty of potential and even more room to grow. Listen to Pith standout “Barren Hill” after the jump.Barren Hill
