Magic Fades will be performing August 3 at Chop Suey. A lot went into writing your favorite song, but how much do you really know about it? This week Michael and Jeremy Fades of Portland electro-pop duo Magic Fades delve into making songs “bang harder” and the intensity of missing a significant other. She Beat All the Haters – SingleRelease Date: July 17th, 2012When it was written: Last fall, but the song has actually gone through quite a few a changes. The original version was completely different. Only some of the vocal melodies remain.Where it was written: In our studio, which we sometimes refer to as “The Keep.”Favorite line in the song: We really like the line that repeats the most: “If it was a long way, believe me I’d walk the whole way to peep those eyes, for you to get home babe it seems that I have to be strong babe, believe in the high.” This part of the song is about how it feels when your girl goes away for a while, and how even though you worry and would do anything to just see them again, you have to chill.
Which part was the hardest to come up with: Well, since the song changed so much, we’d say the over-all vibe and sound palette were the most elusive. Something as simple as changing your snare sound or adding a little twinkle to a verse can really kill or bring your track to life. If you could go back and change anything, what would it be: Probably just to make it bang harder. We really feel the structure and melodies are really sound, but the production can always be better. On the other hand, sometimes you have to just say “enough is enough” and move on. Otherwise, you’ll be tweaking ideas until you’re old and gross.Odd fact about song: For some reason, we used auto tune on the guitar solo. In the middle of the solo is this sort of strange auto tune warble but we both loved it so we kept it. I’m not sure why we did that come to think of it.
What was your inspiration for writing the song: Not one thing in particular inspired the creation of this song. Honestly the inspiration could come from a chord on the piano, a vocal melody, or some kick sample that is pleasing us at the time and then the snowball effect begins. One thing is certain, when we’re working together on a new cut and we’re bouncing ideas back and forth, getting somewhere with the song, nailing the hook and so forth — it’s exhilarating.When was your favorite time performing it live: We played this show at an artspace/venue called Boom Bap with Religious Girls and Prescription Pills, and there were a lot of people there, and it was really hot. I just remember tearing it up on the solo, and Jeremy’s synth part was spot on and we really felt it.What is the meaning behind the song: Like we mentioned, the main lyric is about how it feels when your other is gone. It’s also about how your imagination can run wild when you are alone and feeling down, amplifying the positive and negative things that have been going on in your life.
