Rachael Yamagata: singer, multi-instrumentalist, relationship counselor. On her latest album, Chesapeake, and throughout her discography, Yamagata voices the joy and pain that come with relationships. On opener “Even if I Don’t,” for instance, she goes through the “Should I or shouldn’t I?” inner dialogue most listeners have had when thinking about getting back together with an ex before deciding it’d be “a foolish thing to do.” And on “Miles on a Car,” she sings about doing all you can to see someone you love: “I only need a map of where you are/There’ll never be a place that is too far.” Good or bad, Yamagata guides listeners through it all. Danish singer songwriter MØ doesn’t fit the mold of a pop breakout star. Her glitch-filled, electro-pop beats are a bit more off-kilter than the status quo, but she’s finding a massive global audience. It’s a good kind of weird that feels more indebted to James Blake than to James Blunt. With HOLYCHILD. The Neptune, 1303 N.E. 45th St., 877-784-4849, stgpresents.com/neptune. 8 p.m. $18 adv./$20 DOS. It’s hard to make the soft-rock sounds of AM radio sound “cool,” but indie rockers Tennis somehow found a way. Its latest album, Ritual in Repeat, makes toned-down disco rhythms and sweet melodies harness the appeal of 1970s slow jams. Vocalist Alaina Moore croons like a truck-stop siren, capturing the desperation of the road through hazy radio frequencies. With Pure Bathing Culture, Crystal Skulls. Neumos. 8 p.m. $15 adv. 21 and over. DH
For more than 20 years, Canadian power-pop outfit Sloan has consistently delivered radio-ready rock hits. Following the Beatles’ model, each member contributes to the songwriting process, which would make its latest album, Commonwealth, its version of the “White Album.” It’s divided into four parts, each member taking a turn leading the group and each side just as strong as the others. Even drummer Andrew Scott’s sprawling 17-minute closer is an easily digestible opus. Tractor Tavern, 5213 Ballard Ave. N.W., 789-3599, tractortavern.com. 8 p.m. $15. 21 and over. DH
