Mike McGinn is dedicated to hoops in Seattle, going as far as embarrassing himself a bit Sunday when he took the court with some NBA stars.

Fans packed the Royal Brougham Pavilion at Seattle Pacific University to watch the best hoopers from the area put on a show at the All-Star game of the Jamal Crawford Summer Pro-Am. McGinn was only allowed to play for five minutes, going toe-to-toe with Tyreke Evans, who was the Sacramento Kings’ best player for the past four years. That was all the motivation McGinn needed.

The mayor scored the first bucket of the game: a silky smooth ten-foot jumper from the right baseline that ignited the crowd. He found himself guarding Evans one-on-one a few possessions later, and McGinn nearly fell over after Evans shook him with a shammgod crossover. It wasn’t the first time Sacramento got the best of Seattle in recent memory.

But McGinn isn’t ready to give up on basketball in his city, and he showed it the very next play. The mayor brought the ball down the court, did a crossover of his own and threw a no-look dime to a teammate as he cut to the basket.

Before the game McGinn gave a convincing speech about having an professional franchise in Seattle again. And with the ongoing support he and basketball fanatics in the area have given the Pro-Am, there’s no doubt that an NBA team should be here.

My suggestion for the mayor would be to stay off the court before he breaks an ankle, but he certainly won the hearts and votes of some Seattleites with his participation in Sunday’s event.
