Terraplane Sun will be performing Sept. 21 at The MixA lot went into writing your favorite song, but how much do you really know about it? This week Ben Rothbard, vocalist and guitarist of Venice, Calif. indie rock band Terraplane Sun, delves into (almost) writing for a side project, Motown dance and life lessons from dad.Song: “Get Me Golden”Album:

FriendsRelease Date: Oct. 16, 2012When it was written: Aug. 2011Where it was written: My houseFavorite line in the song: “All I want, all I want, all I really really want is to know that the love is worth the sacrifice.” Which part was the hardest to come up with: The bridge. The majority of the song came very quickly and fairly effortlessly. We had the demo laid out, but knew it needed to change directions at some point, hence a bridge. We struggled for a bit to create that perfect diversion and then Gabe came to the rescue. It has turned out to be one of our favorite parts of the song.If you could go back and change anything, what would it be: I would honestly have to say nothing. I think we pieced together a pretty groovy little number. Either way, what’s done is done. All eyes are ahead at this point.Odd fact about song: The song was originally meant to be part of some sort of a side project. It’s fairly different than our other stuff, but still works at the same time. When we played it for the rest of the band, they immediately said that it was going to be a Terraplane Sun song and that was that. I think we made the right move. What was your inspiration for writing the song: We were really after a Motown style dancer. A lot of our music gets people movin and we wanted to take it to the next level. More than anything, it was like, “Let’s go!”When was your favorite time performing it live: Last night (Sept. 14) at the Malibu Inn. Place was nuts and we probably played it as well as we’ve ever played it.What is the meaning behind the song: If you want something, you gotta go get it. Its not gonna come to you. This is something I’ve definitely learned during my short stint on this planet and especially in this crazy industry. Nothing’s gonna happen while you’re lying on the couch. You gotta literally be out and get after it. As my Dad has always said, 90% of it is just showing up. We’re after this and believe in what we’re doing 110%. The rest is just work, work, work. As long as you give it everything you have, failure is not a possibility. Sorry, getting a little preachy, but you asked. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter!
