The fierce Reverend Peyton. Photos by Joshua Lynch. The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn BandWhen: Sunday, June 16, 8:30 p.m.Where:
Chop SueyI was a little worried when I showed up perhaps a little bit too early for Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band show last night and found a small crowd seated and sorely lacking enthusiasm as opener Ha Ha Tonka put on a rather good show. Their sound is clean and catchy, and their rock-Ozark folk combo sets them apart from other up-and-coming indie bands. I felt sorry for the young band as they wailed out their four-part harmonies for a nigh-on-dead crowd. Ha Ha Tonka drummer Lennon Bone rockin’ despite the crowd’s lackluster performance. But that’s all the more credit to Reverend Peyton and his (not so) Big (but awesome) Damn Band. Once the big fella took the stage to the beating drums of his bro, Jayme Peyton, the crowd was on its feet and rocking. The Reverend is a stellar performer, juggling between three different string instruments and a harmonica while drawling out lyrics inspired by his father drunk at one of his shows or a silly fish advisory. While the Big Damn Band has some serious twang (which is particularly evident in their recorded work), their live sound is better and certainly more acceptable to folks who prefer, say, 50 Cent. Top that with a cymbal-kicking, screaming, crowd-involving showman, and you get one of the more entertaining concerts I’ve witnessed in awhile.P.S. Reverend, I love the beard. More photos after the jump….He’s not your typical pastor: The Reverend rocks like, well, a rocker. And so does the Reverend’s wife, Washboard Breezy.Getting the crowd into it, screaming ”two bottles of wine!”Yeah, kick that cymbal’s ass.The encore…
