Anyone else catch half-term governor Sarah Palin shooting a caribou on her show “Sarah Palin’s Alaska” on Sunday? Yeah, me neither. But I did catch the flurry of coverage it got from everyone from PETA activists who say she is evil for it, to hunting experts who say she doesn’t know what the hell she’s doing. Anyhow, next time Palin hits the hunting trail she should go with Leland Ford, the Salem, Ore., bow hunter who can bag big game despite having only one usable arm. The AP
reports the story today, along with a photo of Ford using his mouth to cock back an arrow, while his one good arm holds the bow. He apparently lost the use of his other arm back in 1974, when his cousin’s gun went off and shot him in the head, leading to years of recuperation and losing the use of most of the left side of his body. Nowadays, he’s able to draw the 70-pound bowstring back by biting on a patch with his teeth and releasing a puff of air when he wants to fire it. He says he practices by shooting 100 arrows a night, which I’m sure does wonders for his teeth alignment. He says he hunts deer and elk, and recently bagged his first deer of the season.Palin, on the other hand, took five shots to down her caribou, and according to folks in animal-shooting circles, was using a “varmint rifle” when she did it.Personally, I have to hand it to the former governor for not just quitting after two shots.
