The punk rocker in me really wants to kick the living shit out of Dirty Projectors David Longstreth for deconstructing the straight-forward songs of Black Flag (which I have a sentimental attachment to) on his latest Black Flag covers record, Rise Above, but I cant help but applaud him for building them back up in such a unique and compelling way that almost makes me forget that they were even Black Flag songs to begin with. Of course, unconventional approaches to songwriting and structure have always been a part of this New York-based avant-pop ensembles shtick since the beginning of this decade. I suppose I can forgive Longstreth this time, but if his contemporaries Xiu Xiu come out with a batch of Dead Kennedys covers, fisticuffs will ensue.With YACHT and White Rainbow.
