I was bumming around the downtown library this afternoon and stumbled upon the “Time Listings” in the magazine’s July 4, 1969 issue. Chiming in on the upcoming summer’s musical offerings, Time noted, “This summer the U.S. will resonate with music as diverse as the land itself. Pop, rock, folk, jazz and avant-garde compete with Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms in festivals ranging from three-day stands to all-summer affairs.”The music listings including the following note, which I found most interesting:Woodstock Music and Art Fair, Wallkill, NY (Aug. 15-17) is a new venture that plans nonstop performances from 2 p.m. to 2 a.m. by musical hot-rodders such as Canned Heat, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Band, Richie Havens, Jefferson Airplane, and The Who.And it’s going to become shorthand for an entire generation. This may be the only item on Woodstock I’ve ever read that didn’t mention Jimi Hendrix. I know, hindsight of course.
