Question of the Week (from Alex) – Other than Jesus Christ, which person has been the subject of the most biographies and non-fiction books? (Scroll to the bottom of the article for the answer.)The Bar: Prost! (Greenwood, 7311 Greenwood Ave N), Mondays at 8 PM. Prost!, like Die Bierstube and Feierabend, is another one of those bars where the upper-middle class rally to sneer at you if you even hint at trying to order any beer that isn’t of Pure German Stock. Luckily, it seems that liter mugs of Bitburger provide a perfect cure to condescension while you’re admiring the bar’s unpretentious decor. The Quiz: There were three rounds of twenty questions, each round presented in a fancy answer sheet embellished by lace scissors. Generally, you won’t ever see more than nine teams competing for a pot, but that doesn’t make competition any less stiff. A $2 buy-in for every individual team member may not ever add up to more than a $50 first prize, but a second place payout of one boot of beer shows there’s more to victory than awkwardly divvying up a ten-dollar bill between six people.Much like Norm’s, Prost! places the burden of question-correcting on your trivia nemeses. This feature combined with the bar’s policy on quizmaster selection provides a much warmer, social trivia night atmosphere than you’d expect from an evening with beer snobs. The Host: Although Alex provided a terrific game of trivia on the week of July 19th, Prost! prides itself in having a truly peer-run quiz night. Prost! offers a sign-up sheet at the end of every quiz for anyone who aspires to be the geek behind the microphone for a night. Sure, you could argue that this format considerably stacks the odds of wasting a restful Monday night on a terrible, ill-prepared quiz — if you were an asshole. The socialistic role of triviamaster allows people from all sorts of backgrounds to have a shot at preparing a night of specialized questions. Alex explains that the key to a great trivia night isn’t tailoring questions to one generation or one specialty, but to build a quiz that bridges high-brow and low-brow for all sorts of drunk people to enjoy. Length: With the combination of three condensed rounds and the proven-successful peer review system of scoring, Prost! manages to cram 60+ questions inside of 90 minutes, perfect for anyone who wants their trivia nights dense in brain-racking. With the aforementioned rotating host, there’s no guarantee of a concise experience every week. However, the fact that the bar was set high this randomly chosen week is a good sign.Special Effects: Apart from the fancy trim of the paper, each answer sheet came with a visual segment near the bottom — State Flags, Logos of Famous Publishing Houses, and Pasta Shapes decorated each round, all of them enticing identification before the quizmaster could announce the first question. Again, there’s no guarantee that this feature will continue on to next week besides the competitive spirit of the community at Prost!.Drink/Bar Food Specials: $1 off any liter of Prost!’s (ugh) awesome selection of German drafts throughout the entire quiz even makes spectatorship fun.The Verdict: Prost! may not guarantee a consistently awesome quiz every week, but a diverse, dedicated community provides a much better chance than one monolithic bore of a host. Also, who could possibly be upset competing for a boot of beer?Question of the Week’s Answer: Abraham Lincoln (Adolf Hitler was close, but Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure apparently put Abe over the top.)
