Julia Shapiro of Chastity Belt, Stacy Peck of Pony Time, and Bree McKenna of Tacocat all decided to get together, slip on some maternity ward gowns, and form a band. The result is Childbirth—a slackadaisical riot grrl party machine with song titles like “Crossbitch” and “Menopause.”
The group’s first single, “I Only Fucked You As A Joke,” is pretty self-explanatory. Shapiro sings about late night mistakes and hoping she isn’t pregnant over a punk number that sounds like Elastica shambling out of a dumpster (in a good way). In the music video, phalloguitar thrusting, sculptural hole exploring at Volunteer Park and skateboarding ensues.
If you are a fan of any of the member’s three other bands, chances are you will dig Childbirth a lot.
The band’s debut, IT’S A GIRL!, is slated to come out January 7th on Help Yourself Records, the local imprint responsible for Chastity Belt’s No Regerts.
