“Let ‘Em Know” prod. DJ PremierBun B is a rapper who tends to shine brightest when playing off another emcee, and never more so than with his UGK co-conspirator Chad “Pimp C” Butler. But after his partner’s prison sentence and overdose death forced Bun B out on his own, the Texas veteran embarked on a solo Trill series that now includes the 16-track Trill OG. Bun B hasn’t so much evolved since his 1992 UGK debut as developed an impressive consistency in his South-steeped swagger and gangsta rhymes. Matched with hit-makers like J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, Boi-1da and Drumma Boy, who contributed a couple of beats each, his bold and undaunted flow sounds as good as ever. Trill OG sports lots of high-profile features–including T-Pain on the radio-friendly “Trillionaire” and Drake on recent single “Put It Down”–plus a handful of hat-tips like the Pimp C and 2Pac verses on “Right Now,” the Notorious B.I.G.-sampled basis for “All A Dream,” and one of the album’s high points in the DJ Premier-produced Guru tribute “Let ‘Em Know.” In short–dude is a legend whose raps clearly indicate the status. If you don’t want to pick up the entire album, Trill OG’s singles are definitely worth your iTunes dollars.
