First Call is a weekly Voracious feature in which we walk into a bar and ask the bartender to make us his or her favorite drink.Watering Hole: Havana, 1010 East Pike Street, a cavernous thing located in the heart of Capitol Hill. To know it is to have on some random evening peered through its steamy picture windows at the well-manicured folks carousing inside and lamented the decrease of your monthly disposable income. Or maybe that’s just me.Barkeep: Binh Nguyen, an amiable young guy in a Trilby hat, whose existence proves that being insufferable is not a requirement of wearing a Trilby hat.Hangover Architect Since: “Since I started needing the extra money,” he says, flatly. The Clientele: Mostly non-existent save for the brother-journo bellied up to the bar four stools down. Happy-hour is winding down. But as Nguyen explains, the place will be packed in a few hours with the clubbers. Preferred Form of Liquid Courage: “Whiskey, any whiskey,” he says. “On a hot summer’s day, you just can’t beat it.”What We’re Drinking Instead: Raspberry Lemonade Mojito. Like Mojito-classic, but made with raspberry infused vodka instead of rum. As muddling is involved, don’t expect to get one once the crowd shows and the bartenders get busy. So We’re Drinking This Because…?: “You need to know what the people who drink here drink in case you ever come during your free time, and this is really popular with the ladies who come here,” he explains, adding that there are lot of beautiful ladies who frequent Havana. Upon consideration, that’s some pretty unassailable logic. The drink itself tastes like it looks, sweet. But that sweetness isn’t excessive enough to be off-putting. And the finish is refreshing, just as should be with a mojito. The barkeep, grinning, seems bemused by my surprise.Says Nguyen, “Told ya.”
